FrontBringer

Do you often look at your computer desktop and think...

• Wow, what a mess.
• This still needs to lie around so I don't forget about it when I need it in three months
• I can't put all this in a To-do folder because I know I will never look at it

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to put "stuff" in a folder queue with a due date, and software automatically brings it up for you at the right time? This is precisely what FrontBringer does. It was created in order to manage my "reference" files for various projects that were "on hold" in my life.

FrontBringer is a small utility that helps you stay organized, tracking "due dates" for files and folders. You basically just have to create a folder with a date (such as "2007 03 24") and put files and folders in it. When the time comes, FrontBringer will pull the contents out and spit them onto your desktop.

To set it up

1. dowload this software manually by saving this file, or by using bzr get http://code.ecchi.ca/frontbringer (for geeks)
2. give executable permissions to the file
3. create a "reference" directory in your home folder (or change the workdir in the code)
4. create subdirectories in reference/, using the date. Examples (if we are in the year 2008):
• reference/2007
• reference/2007 04 23
• reference/2008 02
• etc
5. put files in those subdirectories
6. make frontbringer execute itself regularly with cron (using gnome-schedule, for example)

When the deadline is reached or overdue, the files contained in that folder will be moved directly onto your desktop (and that folder will be removed).
